The small town of Yavoriv, hidden in the deep forests of the Carpathians, was a place where magic lived alongside people. Here lived a boy named Bohdan, a twelve-year-old dreamer with fair hair and piercing green eyes. Bohdan had one unusual trait – he was incredibly afraid of dragons, even though he had never seen one in his life.
His grandmother Marichka, a wise old woman with kind eyes, often told fairy tales about mysterious Carpathian dragons. But Bohdan listened to these stories with anxiety. He believed that dragons existed and was very afraid of meeting these creatures. However, one day fate decided it was time for the boy to overcome his fears.
It happened in autumn…
It happened in autumn, when the mountains were covered in gold and crimson, and the air began to fill with the scent of dry leaves and resin. Bohdan went into the forest to pick mushrooms and unexpectedly got lost. The sun had already begun to set behind the mountains, and the way home seemed increasingly unknown.
At that moment, he heard a noise in the bushes. The boy froze, his heart beating in his chest like a drum. From the thicket emerged something incredible: a young dragon covered in scales the color of moss and leaves. His large eyes were filled with curiosity and mistrust. He was small for a dragon, but large enough to frighten Bohdan.
– Who are you? – Bohdan asked softly, trying to hide the tremor in his voice.
– I am Smerechok, – the dragon replied, awkwardly shuffling his paw on the ground. – I am lost, just like you.
For the first time, Bohdan realized that a dragon could be just as vulnerable as a human. He cautiously approached the dragon and reached out his hand. The dragon sniffed it and smiled, showing a row of sharp teeth.
– Will you help me find the way home? – the dragon asked timidly.
– If you promise not to eat me, – the boy replied, and they both laughed.
On the way home, Bohdan realized that Smerechok was not evil, but on the contrary, kind and even a bit cowardly. The dragon explained that his tribe hides from people because they are afraid that people will harm them.
– But if we aren’t afraid of each other, we can live in peace, – said Bohdan. – We just need to get to know one another.

From that day on, Bohdan visited his new friend every day. He brought him his favorite dragon treats – sweet blueberries and Carpathian honey. Gradually, a true friendship blossomed between them. Bohdan taught the dragon to speak Ukrainian, and Smerechok showed the boy hidden spots in the forest where the best mushrooms and berries grew.
But one day, their friendship was at risk. A local hunter, Hryts, who had heard about the existence of the dragon, decided to track and hunt Smerechok. Bohdan found out about this by chance and rushed to help his friend.
We fear what we do not know…
Bohdan and Smerechok met the hunter in a high clearing bathed in moonlight. The hunter was already preparing his rifle, but Bohdan stood between him and the dragon.
– Hryts, wait! Smerechok is my friend! He means no one any harm!
– It’s a dragon, he’s dangerous! – the hunter shouted.
– He is only dangerous because of our fear, – the boy replied firmly. – We fear what we do not know. But if we give a chance to know each other, we will see that we can be friends.
Smerechok, seeing his friend’s courage, slowly approached the hunter and extended his paw. It was a moment of truth. Hryts looked indecisively at the dragon, then at Bohdan, and finally, shook the dragon’s outstretched paw.
Conclusion
Since then, the residents of the town of Yavoriv stopped being afraid of dragons, and the dragons themselves no longer hid. People and dragons learned to live side by side in peace and mutual respect. Bohdan became a local hero, and his friendship with Smerechok became a symbol that true bravery lies not in fighting, but in understanding and accepting one another.
And that was the most important fairy tale in the boy’s life: a tale of how true friendship conquers any fear.
