Atlético have built strong momentum

Diego Simeone’s team entered mid-October in very good form. After losing to Liverpool in the Champions League, Atlético produced an impressive run: 3-0 against Real Sociedad, 4-0 against Osasuna, 2-1 against Real Madrid, 2-1 against Alavés and then a 2-0 Champions League win over Manchester United on October 13.

The important point is not only the number of victories. Atlético have shown they can win different types of games: controlling weaker opponents when required to dominate possession, while still being effective in more balanced contests.

Home advantage is another major argument. Osasuna, Real Madrid and Manchester United have already been beaten at the Metropolitano this season. Current club results are available on Atlético’s official site.

Deportivo look more competitive than the matchup first suggests

It would be a mistake to view Deportivo as a team simply trying to survive 90 minutes in Madrid. After eight league games, Deportivo had 10 points from two wins, four draws and two defeats, with 12 goals scored and 11 conceded.

Wins away to Villarreal, 3-2, and at home to Valencia, 3-1, showed that Deportivo can cause serious problems for stronger opponents. Their latest results are available through La Liga.

On October 11, Deportivo lost 3-2 to Real Sociedad. Yet even after falling 3-0 behind, they continued to attack and scored twice. That resilience matters when assessing a difficult trip to Madrid.

The key factor is Atlético’s schedule

The biggest concern for Atlético is not Deportivo alone but the workload immediately before the game. Simeone’s side travel to Espanyol on October 17, then play Stuttgart away in the Champions League on October 20. Four days later they face Deportivo.

That sequence increases the probability of rotation, accumulated fatigue and a lower-intensity performance. If Atlético fail to score relatively early, Deportivo may remain one moment away from a positive result deep into the game.

How Deportivo can make the game difficult

The visitors’ best route is to avoid turning the opening stages into an end-to-end contest. If Deportivo absorb the initial pressure and prevent Atlético from building an early cushion, time begins to work in their favor.

They have already demonstrated that they can create chances in difficult matches. Scoring three times against Villarreal and twice against Real Sociedad shows that their attacking ceiling is meaningful.

There are also fitness questions to monitor. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Zakaria Eddahchouri and Marc Casadó had been training separately ahead of Deportivo’s next match. Their status should be reassessed closer to October 24 rather than treated as confirmed absences.

What could decide the match

First, the opening goal. If Atlético score early, Deportivo will have to open up, which favors the hosts.

Second, Atlético’s physical condition after the Champions League trip. A high-intensity game in Stuttgart could still be felt four days later.

Third, Deportivo’s transition efficiency. They do not need to dominate possession. One or two well-executed breaks could make the contest much more difficult for the favorite.

The strongest argument against the prediction

The biggest risk is an Atlético performance below their normal intensity. Simeone may rotate after the European trip, and if the home side do not establish control early, Deportivo have enough attacking threat and resilience to keep the game alive.

For that reason, this is not treated as a near-certain home win.

ORBK.NET prediction

Atlético still hold a substantial overall advantage. They have the stronger squad, greater experience at elite level, home advantage and a much more convincing recent sequence of results.

Deportivo, however, have already shown that they can score against strong opposition, while Atlético’s schedule creates an extra layer of uncertainty.

Our prediction: Atlético Madrid to win.

ORBK.NET estimate: approximately a 70% chance of an Atlético victory.

The working range is 65-75%. Atlético are clear favorites in our assessment, but the probability of a draw or an upset remains too significant to justify maximum confidence.

Final assessment

The most likely script is Atlético gradually taking control and using their advantage in individual quality. The central question is how much the Stuttgart trip takes out of Simeone’s team four days earlier.

If Atlético arrive without new injury concerns and without excessive fatigue, their advantage should remain convincing.

Final ORBK.NET prediction: Atlético Madrid to win — 70%.
